FAQs

As Secondhand Sunday's readership grows I find myself being asked more and more questions about my life, my style, and my growing love of photography. To help my readers get to know me a little better, and to answer some of those questions, I've started opening up Q&As periodically on the blog. These FAQs are pulled from some of my favorite questions, and I've also included a few others you might be curious about.

ABOUT US
What do you do for a living? I am currently the co-owner of the Button Factory by night, and work full-time as an Office Manager for a screen printing company by day.

Your name is spelt funny, what's up with that? There’s a story there, found here.

Why did you start Secondhand Sundays? I started blogging in my senior year of college as a way to catalog things that inspired me online (like Pinterest before it existed). It evolved sometime in the summer of 2011 to include more personal images, daily life, and the creative projects involved in planning a wedding. It was then that I recognized the value of blogging as a way to not only stay connected with loved ones living far away, but also connect with new people across the global. I love meeting people I would have never had the opportunity to interact with otherwise, and finding out that we have similar interests and values. The blogging community has been so positive and uplifting, and I'm constantly inspired by the people I meet.

You were recently married, do you have any pictures of your big day we can see? I've done a couple of series on our wedding pictures found here. You can also read more about our married life here.

What's your husband's name, and what does he do for a living? My husband's name is Ryan, and you'll often see him around on Secondhand Sundays, because we love doing things together! Ryan currently works in the banking industry during the day, and freelances as an audio engineer by night. His degree is in Music Business and Audio Engineering, a field he hopes to work full-time in soon. You can learn more about him here.

Do you and Ryan want to have children? That's a tricky question, but the answer is currently no. We love the idea of children and think parents are awesome, but we feel parenthood is something you have to be fully committed to before taking the leap, and we're just not there yet. Our creative ambitions outweigh our need to start a family. We are the proud parents of a doggy named Nellie, and she has us wrapped around her little paw.

Where are you from? I like to say I'm like the best iced tea, half and half. I am originally from Ohio and consider the north my roots but Virginia and the south are where I'm from today. I'm proud of both my hometowns. I currently reside in Roanoke, VA.

Do you plan to stay in Roanoke or move to a larger city? We love Roanoke, and will always consider the Blue Ridge Mountains our home. There is something so special about this portion of the Appalachian Mountains. We do however, plan to move to a major city for at least a couple years in the near future. We're always ready for new adventures.

What's your favorite part of the day? My favorite part of the day is the moment when Ryan walks through the door after work. It is that magic moment when I look in his eyes and remember why I married my best friend, because with him I know I am safe to be myself no matter what that looks like.

MY STYLE
How tall are you? 5'2"

How old are you? 27 (My birthday is in October)

You seem to have a really great eye for thrifted vintage items. What are your vintage shopping secrets? I wrote a guest post featuring my favorite thrifting tricks and tips here.

Where do you shop? I consider my style very eclectic; mixing both secondhand clothing, and new pieces in my everyday wardrobe. Though Roanoke is no shopping capital we're lucky enough to have two JCrew warehouse stores close-by, and a wide variety of thrift stores to choose from. I love to shop and find a large portion of my wardrobe coming from my travels, and online. I love buying vintage one of a kind pieces, Zara, Anthropologie, Topshop, and Forever 21. Of course our little vintage shop is a great place to find clothes too!

MY PHOTOGRAPHY
What camera do you use? I currently own a Canon EOS Rebel T3i EF-S 18-55mm. Though I don't have any fancy lenses, or flashes I have learned a trick or two about diffusing lighting and adjusting focus thanks to the internet. Check out my photo tips Pinterest board for resources, and this e-course by Arrow&Apple on lighting. I highly recommend the class for beginners!

Who takes your photos? A majority of the photos on Secondhand Sundays are taken by me, with the exceptions being the My Closet posts, which are taken by my husband Ryan. I also gather pictures from a wide variety of sources for my Weekly Obsessions posts, a feature that focuses on things I find interesting online. I always try to give appropriate credit when posting someone else's photo, if you see a mistake please let me know!

What software do you use? I use Photoshop for all of my photo editing.

What techniques do you use to edit your photos? I use a wide variety of techniques when editing my photos, and plan on writing a more in-depth post on this soon. My typical editing process involves using both actions and curves in Photoshop. I find curves the easiest and most effective way to edit my photos. I love using Julia Trotti's curve sets on my photos, and have made several of my own as well.

MY ART & CRAFT
Did you study to be an artist? My degree is in Studio Art and though I love painting, drawing, and creating it became very evident to me that a career based solely on my art as an income would not be an immediate possiblity. I strive to live a creative life and currently enjoy creating art as hobby.

What inspires you and your artwork? Like any artist my inspiration comes from many sources. I feel most inspired by the little moments in life often overlooked in our day to day, and the way I view the world as a woman. Femininity and what defines it is often the backbone of my work. I'm also influenced by long walks, lively discussion, and religion. Artists I have found influential to my style include; Cezanne, Degas, Caravaggio, and David Hockney. I hope you can see their influence in my work!

Do you plan on selling paintings in the future? I hope to, but right now I'm building up my inventory and rediscovering my artistic voice. For examples of what I do please check out this post.

What medium do you work in? My paintings are created using acrylic paint and charcoal. I also draw both on paper and digitally. I have always considered myself a multi-medium artist and that label still sticks.

Would you do a commission piece for me? I would love to do a commission piece for you! Currently I am accepting commission work for landscapes, still lifes, and pets. I'm sorry that I can't do individual or group portraits; maybe in the future. For more information, and a price quote, please email me at secondhand.sundays{at}gmail{dot}com.
