This is it folks, the last week we officially live in Virginia. All week we'll be painting, cleaning, packing, and just generally preparing ourselves to move 6.5 hours north and lightyears away from what we've known all these years. As I prepare myself for leaving one place I can't help but think about all we have to look forward to in the new. Which in my mind naturally leads to thinking about home decor. Here's the problem, I have two very conflicting styles I love right now.
On one hand I see myself leaning towards a cozy, multi-layered, eclectic abode. Full of colorful blankets, deep colors, and worn furniture. Heavily influenced by my love of Folk Art (it runs deep friends). I can totally see Ryan and I living in a space like this....

Then on the other hand I can also see us in a more sparsely decorated space. Something more French provencal, or general store inspired. Less layering, more organized, and lots of negative space to keep our minds clear. I see lots of baskets, fluffy whites, and worn wooden crates in this vision. A little something like....

As I've been packing I've noticed that our stuff could kind of go both ways depending on the presentation. There will always be red, but other than that there's nothing keeping me from rearranging stuff based on these two choices. Only making this thought process harder. The most important thing is that it's comfortable, put together, and looks intentional. Which style do you see us in more? I need your help! big kiss, bekuh

I'm a big fan of eclectic folky styling..I find it so much easier to be cheerful in a living space that's bursting with colour. I could see why you might also be drawn to the more minimalist French style though. I think it often depends on the space you're dealing with though and the amount of natural light it gets...muted, minimalist colours look extra pretty when they've got light spilling in on them from large windows. I can't wait to see how you decorate your new space whatever style you settle on :)
ReplyDeleteI dealt with this same dilemma when we moved into our new place- i wanted a very clean, modern space (especially since it was so small!)but after trying to create that space I realized that I needed color and comfort of cozy pieces. Now our place if filled with color and little things that remind us of places we've lived over the years. Go with what feels like the most you, because when you're in a new space and a new place you will want that comfort of it feeling like it's YOUR space.
ReplyDeleteSo excited for you!

I love both styles too, but the more cozy layered look is my favourite. I'd like to have a bit of both in our home. Ultimately I'd like to balance busy bright details with a clean open space.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the look of the first group of photos but have to admit that sparse in the second set means less time to have to spend on dusting. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you can do both! I love eclectic styling but when I see it in homes it usually means many objects that can sometimes turn to clutter. I think a folksy decor is all about statement pieces which can work with a more minimalist home. For example, I can see that big bookcase set up in the first set of pictures taking up a wall, while the rest of the room is more minimal. Just a thought!
ReplyDeleteWow I can totally feel you on this dilemma, I am going through the same thing with my room right now! I am always torn between clean whites, and eclectic with layers of colors. At least you narrowed it down to two, and both are wonderful choices! You could always try a balance between the two :)
ReplyDeleteeclectic is always fun!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI say the first :) Although I love both + sometimes get sick of my clutter. I couldn't really imagine a clean, noncluttered house though for me. Good luck! I can't wait to see your new place. ♥Lindsay
ReplyDeleteI think a healthy in between of negative space and clutter. Enjoy the time you have left in Virginia and best of luck on the move!
ReplyDeleteI actually like both but tend to always go for the cozier option. My house is full of warm colours and textures. As much as I love white and french style it can sometimes lack the coziness you may want.

Since you're moving into a smaller place, I can def. see your interest in going more with the minimalist, but I also love having some bursts of color and some coziness that you find with the first group. Can't wait to see what you end up doing.
ReplyDeleteSo glad I'm not the only one that gets torn between decorating styles! It can seriously be hard to pick just one look! Although out of those two choices I see both of you more with the first one for some reason.
ReplyDeleteMix them girl!!! Like do your bedroom in one and your living room in another. Eclectic is all your style too

Both styles are very similar and I think you could mix both styles easily. I think your biggest difference is the way that you organize your belongings/furniture. Keep it simple and uniform but also keep the richness and warmth of the "folk" feel.
ReplyDeleteMaybe your accessories are detailed and richly colored but kept to a minimal against a white space, like here -

Or maybe something more comforting and free, like here-

I think that having a white-walled, well-organized, "minimal-stuff/maximal-room" space would help keep your mind and soul calm. Ahaha, I hope all of that helped and didn't seem to unkempt.
Your sense of style is so eclectic, and I can't wait to see how your finished spaces look! Also, I recommend checking this blog out! - http://decor8blog.com/category/reader-spaces/
Good luck!
The first style reads very "homey" and inviting, while the second style reads more peace, quiet & solitude (at least to me). I honestly think a home needs both. I like the idea of adding touches of both into different rooms - the first style you could have in your living space and kitchen and perhaps the second style in bedrooms & bathrooms (or vice versa).
ReplyDeleteI just love dreaming about my future place! my computer is full of the pictures of home ideas.
ReplyDeleteOH and I really love your writing style!
