Weekly Obsessions: Feeling Cozy

9.30.2012

Image Sources: 1(unknown)/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9
You know how some images just make you instantly happy, or warm inside? Well I'm constantly seeking out images that illicit that feeling for me, and today I've collected some images for you that make me feel good about life. I've been really craving extra downtown lately, to the point where I've purposely put off loads of todos to just sit and read, watch an old TV show, or craft for me for awhile. I always get a little introspective with the passing of each chapter in my life, and as Ryan and I celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary this weekend I can't help but want to get cozy and reminisce about another year's passing.

1. Romanticism lives, in my heart at least.
2. Nutella Steamer via the darling Bridget
3. Vera Neumann, someone I've admired unknowingly for years
4. New uses for old things
5. Fall leaves changing in the mountains, like this
6. Festive wreaths are on my mind
7. Riding bikes is of utmost importance, as is pretty artwork
8. I will try this hairstyle soon
9. Plush little boggles too adorable for words.

Enjoy the last bits of your weekend, and the end of September. I'm going to go cozy up to my hubby now. big kiss, bekuh

Note: I try to give credit where credit is do, if I you know the source of an image I've labeled as unknown, or if I've misrepresented a source please let me know. I'm happy to either remove the image, or give proper credit. Thanks!

Life in Insta/ Late September

9.28.2012

I can't believe September is coming to a close. This month has gone by so fast, mostly due to the fact I've been traipsing all over the US, and we're off again this weekend to Washington DC. Ryan and I celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary this coming Monday and in honor of such an occasion we're getting away for a little romantic weekend. I'm so excited! Anyway back to pictures...
Since coming back from Chicago I've....
1. Failed at keeping Nellie out of our bed for any length of time at all
2. Spent a day capturing my Mom's birthday
3. Received the best gift from Katherine in honor of our giveaway
4. Walked Nellie dog a lot
5. Started seeing color palettes everywhere, including my passenger seat
6. Spent time with my little family and admired my handsome husband
7. Gotten sick and better
8. Tried out my new fall coat on more than one occasion
9. Done laundry
10. Eaten so many yummy meals, due in part to our massive cheese pile in the fridge. Mmmm cheese.

If you'd like to see more pics from the little Browning clan follow me on Instagram @bekuhdoo. What changes, or adventures has September brought you? Happy Friday! big kiss, bekuh

My Personal Style Revelations

9.27.2012

I've been doing a lot of letting go lately, not of heavy emotional burdens, but the stuff that you start accumulating when you've lived in a place for 3+ years. I think this must be some kind of epidemic because everyone in blog-land seems to be simplifying their lives right now haha. Through this recent purge I've really started to notice some style trends I gravitate towards, like a lot. For the sake of the future me, who will most certainly want to buy into fads and trends, I thought I'd make a list of the things you'll pretty much always find in my closet.

1. Pendant Necklaces
I have about 24 or so (exaggeration for effect) necklaces with a simple pendant on the end and I wear one of them almost everyday. I love the way a long necklace extends my short silhouette and lays on most fabric. I also love playing with said pendants when I'm wearing them and it gives me something to do in awkward social moments.

2. Reddish Brown Vintage Bags
I don't know when or how my little collection of leather bags started, but if you look at my handbags you'll see that 75% of these goodies are a reddish brown color and worn around the edges. I think I gravitate towards the red browns because they'll go with black or brown and that color leather never goes out of style. Also I buy them thrifted and vintage because I'm cheap and can't afford newer models.

3. Neutral Colored Shoes
Ryan made a comment this past Spring about how I buy pretty much the same color shoes over and over again, and though I am trying to branch out, I think it's important to buy my more expensive investment pieces in a color that I can wear with a lot of clothing options. So you'll always see me rocking tans, browns, and blacks; sorry if it bores you.

4. Knee length skirts & dresses
Okay so to be fair this is something I've known for a long time, but knee length skirts/dresses (or just above) are the most flattering length for my petite frame. I love a good maxi every now and again, and minis are great for date nights, but knee length skirts are classy and timeless and I like that in my clothes.

5. Stripes
I have loved striped shirts since about the age of 12; when I first heard of their mystique, and saw their glamour in old movies. I have since owned at least one black and white striped shirt without fail. I have continued to add to my stripe collection through the years, and there are a couple of tops that are wearing a bit thin. Soon I'll be adding a couple more of these cuties to my wardrobe, because I just can't stop myself.

I bet if you look through my archives you'll notice a lot of these things in past outfit posts. What are some of your style essentials? Have you too been bit by the simplification bug? I'd love to hear. big kiss, bekuh

DIY Braided Tassel Necklace

9.26.2012

Fall is a time for cozy accessories, warm colors, and indoor crafting. In an attempt to bring a little of the cozy, and crafty into my fall wardrobe I decided to make a braided tassel necklace reminiscent of 1970s jewelry. Today learn to make this necklace for yourself!
Supplies: Chunky yarn in whatever color you desire (the chunkier the better), scissors, tape, and 1 large wooden bead. All of these supplies can be bought at your local craft store.
Step 1: Drape the yarn around your neck and measure the length of the necklace you desire. Now add another half length of yarn to your desired length and snip. You'll need the extra yarn for braiding.

Step 2: Cut two additional pieces of yarn and make sure that everything is lined up end to end.

Step 3: Tie a knot in the center of your 3 yarn pieces. This will make braiding each side a lot easier.

Step 4: Tape down one side of your necklace to a table or board, and separate the three strands of yarn you're going to braid first.
Step 5: Start braiding your necklace, leaving about 6 inches extra at the end for knotting and the tassel.

Step 6: Where you plan to stop the braid, pull the middle strand to the left and hold the other two yarn pieces together on the right.

Step 7: Knot the two strands off to the right side, leaving the single strand to dangle alone. Flip the necklace over to braid the other side, repeating step 5.

Step 8: Repeat step 6 but this time pull the center strand to the right and the other two yarn pieces to the left. Knot the two strands like in step 7. See the image above for an example of what your ends should look like.
Step 9: hold the two single yarn strands together and grab your tape and bead.

Step 10: Tape the ends of the two yarn pieces together tightly, creating a "shoelace" end to string the bead through.

Step 11: String your bead.

Step 12: Ensure that the bead is tight against the knots of the additional yarn strands and fan everything out.
Step 13: Knot the yarn below the bead to secure it in place.

Step 14: Trim off any excess yarn so that all of the strands are about the same length, and a length you find visually appealing.

Step 15: Begin to pull apart the yarn to create the tassel. Do this to both sides and below the bead.

Step 16: Grab the two fanned out sides and pull them over and under the bead so that they'll lay flat behind it.

You're done! Enjoy your new 70s style necklace and be proud you made it all by yourself. big kiss, bekuh

Looking for the perfect kitchen accessory?

9.25.2012

You may have noticed a pretty kitchen towel in the oatmeal cookie post from this morning and I'm here to say that this is officially my new favorite kitchen accessory. The lovely Jessica from Life In Progress contacted me at the beginning of the month offering anything from her amazing shop and I snatched up the Proper Table Manner towel for my newly decorated kitchen. It's a super soft flour sack material, ultra absorbent, and easy to match with any decor. I highly recommend checking out Jessica's shop as the holidays approach, or you're looking for a last minute wedding gift. I've been using this towel for a couple weeks now and I'm already eyeing her Visitors hand towel for my bathroom too! big kiss, bekuh

Oatmeal Cookies in Three Ways

The fall weather is making me really happy. The chilly nights are settling in, and soon we'll all be wearing sweaters, wrapped up in blankets, and comfort food will be on every table. One of those comfort foods for me is a warm cookie fresh out of the oven. Today I'm going to share a basic oatmeal cookie recipe in three variations. You'll learn to make 1. peanut butter and jelly oatmeal cookies, 2. salted caramel oatmeal cookies,  and 3. cherry, walnut, and white chocolate oatmeal cookies. All delicious and incredibly easy to make.
Basic Oatmeal Cookie Recipe:
Mix in a medium size bowl-
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

Combine in a separate bowl-
1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 large eggs
3 tsp vanilla

Mix everything together in a large bowl and then add 3 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats. Set aside the cookie dough. Pre-heat your oven to 350F and grease or line a cookie sheet. You're now ready for your toppings to the mix. My favorite part!
Optional Toppings 1:
1/2 cup Dried Cherries
1/2 cup White Chocolate
1/2 cup Walnuts
(Measurements for a full batch of cookies)
Optional Toppings 2:
1/2 cup Preserves (I used raspberry)
1 cup Peanut butter Chips
(Measurements for a full batch of cookies)
Optional Toppings 3:
1 cup Caramel Candies (cut in half)
1 tbsp Sea Salt
Coat the caramels in the salt for even distribution throughout cookies.
(Measurements for a full batch of cookies)
Dump your ingredients into the cookie dough and mix until combined. You are now ready to bake. Spoon 2 tablespoons of dough in a ball onto a greased cookie sheet. Tip: Use an ice cream scoop for an even, round cookie.
Bake until just browned, but still soft (about 12-14 minutes). Let cool on the cookie sheet for a couple of minutes before removing and placing on a cooling rack. Personally the only thing that could make these cookies any better for me would be a little cuddle time with Ryan, a visually striking movie, and a giant glass of milk. Have an incredible day and enjoy cookies whenever possible! big kiss, bekuh

Monday Monday

9.24.2012

Hello friends and welcome to a new week. Last week was a hard one as first Ryan and then Nellie got sick and this weekend was spent mostly on the couch for me. I too was hit hard by some mysterious little virus that seems to be going around. I managed to rally for dinner with friends on Saturday night, but Sunday was the worst! Now that everyone in my little family has had this bug and survived it perhaps this week will seem a little more normal and organized. I'm looking forward to this new week and have a fresh perspective going into my work both paid and unpaid. Sorry if the posting has seemed a little more off than normal, we'll be ship shape before you know it. Have a great week, and I'll see you tomorrow. big kiss, bekuh

Weekly Obsessions: My Birthday Wishlist

9.23.2012

Two things occurred to me as I started creating this week's Weekly Obsessions post:
1. Man am I a boring person to buy for.
2. I seem to be really drawn to orangey-red, golden brown, and green things currently.

All kidding aside this is my for real wish list for my birthday this year, in all it's strange color palette glory. Here's what I'd like to buy/receive this October:
1. My 2013 planner. I've been using this same calendar for 2012 and love it!
2. This limited edition print is from one of my current favorite artists on Etsy.
3. I've been looking for a vintage skirt in this color to no avail, bring on the custom order!
4. I've wanted these Paper Dolls forever...it's seriously time to make this happen.
5. I need a new pair of red shoes and these flats are just too adorable to say no to.
6. Apple baskets, you read that right, I want 8 bushel size baskets to use as storage under our bed.
7. The Prints book by Heather Ross, I'm so intrigued by this and I've been a bit pattern obsessed lately. Why not learn how to make my own?
8. Frames like these for all the fabulous art I'm going to get, and have already bought at Renegade!

We're just three weeks from b-day and I'm starting to feel my age. Happy Sunday friends! big kiss, bekuh

Fall is Coming

Girls, Greek Food, and My Mom

9.19.2012

Better late than never...For my mom's birthday this year she wanted a little time with her girls. My sister came into town from Mississippi for the weekend and it was kind of like an early birthday gift for me to have her around. We started the day at the annual Greek Festival in town. My mom's entourage: Me, my sister, Judy, and herself
top: my mom examining dessert middle:greek desserts bottom: my beautiful sister
We ate spanakopita, drank hand squeezed lemonade, and gorged ourselves on greek dessert. It was a pretty spectacular start to our girls day out. After lunch we headed to the opposite side of town for manicures and pedicures. We set up camp at the Beauty Bar and for the next 2 hours we were massaged, lotioned, and mani-pedied.
top: Mom and Judy sharing secrets middle: the laughter that too often ensues bottom: Mom and Judy
My mom's best friend Judy (or Aunt Judy as we like to call her) was so much fun to have on our adventures. No one can make my mom laugh like Judy can, and I love spying on their silly conversations. Even if I can't remember them later on. Aren't these pictures of the two of them so perfect?

After we'd read the latest gossip and let our nails really dry we headed out and met the men for dinner. Too much Italian food, too many hugs, and grainy family photos and the day was done. I love getting to spend time with my family! big kiss, bekuh

Home & Style Scrapbooks

9.18.2012

In high school I learned a little bit about bookbinding and made several journals for myself. Originally meant to be sketchbooks; somewhere between sophomore year of high school and college they turned into scrapbooks of clippings from magazines for both home decor and style. I recently uncovered these scrapbooks and started to add into them again. It's amazing how little my style has changed over the last decade and how much these little books have preserved of my younger self. I thought it would be fun to share them with you as I begin to use them again myself.
The cover of the home decor scrapbook never did make sense for the contents so I recovered the front and back and started adding things like captions, new photos, and samples of the vintage wallpaper I've started collecting. When Ryan and I finally do settle down and buy a house there are a few features I know we'll simply have to have: natural wood furnishings, a massive pantry, and exposed wood everywhere. We both love vintage furnishings and style with rustic charm.

My style scrapbook is a lot thinner than the home decor book, you can tell where my priorities lie, but it is nearly crammed full of magazine clippings from 2002 on. The cover of this scrapbook is hued in some of my all time favorite colors: tomato red, mint green, peach, and yellow. To this day that's a reflection of my personality.
So many of the looks in this book have been styles I've tried to replicate through the years, with thick braids, classic lines, vintage florals, and a feminine silhouette. I've known far longer than I ever realized what my "look" should be, but I'm just now getting the hang of it. It's fun adding newer clippings alongside the old ones and seeing how they compliment and contrast one another.

There is no specific design or layout with these, no artistic flourishes, just images of inspiration haphazardly glued onto dusty pages. Do any of you keep scrapbooks like this? I'd love to see some. Big kiss, bekuh

6 Tips For Finding Inspiration

9.17.2012

I've been in a real slump this month; all my gung-ho creative energy seems to have been all used up. Instead of moping around and feeling sorry for myself I've made a conscious effort to seek out inspiration and jump start on some fall projects. When I need to get my creative juices flowing again these 6 tips always seem to be just what I need to push through and meet a deadline (imaginary or not).

1. Talk through an idea out loud and to yourself.
Sometimes your own opinion is the only one you need to hash out an idea fully, and the only way I've been able to do that is to talk it through with myself. I recommend trying this exercise out loud so you force yourself to stay on topic. Talking through the idea will help give you a fresh perspective and really decide what parts are good and bad.

2. Play some music and dance freely.
Whether your creative outlet includes, writing, drawing, cooking, or playing an instrument sometimes a little music can help loosen up the old brain muscles and open your eyes to a different world.

3. Cook something from memory, no cheating.
Trying to recreate something completely from memory will challenge you and force you to use your imagination when your memory fails. I can almost guarantee you that your finished dish will be as delicious or more so than the one you were trying to recreate.

4. Eat a meal outside.
Food uses almost all of our senses to consume and so it only makes sense to include it twice on this list. Inspiration can come from really unexpected sources and in unexpected times. Eating a meal outside will create circumstances in which all five of your senses are used; hearing, touching, seeing, tasting, and smelling. Important to and inspiration seeker.

5. Take a nap, or just rest without any technology close by.
In today's world it's really easy to get caught up in technology and sensory over load. When I'm starting to feel like my eyes are going to fall out from looking at a computer screen I take a 5 minute break away from all technology and just sit. Try this the next time you need to jog your brain out of auto.

6. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and sit alone in a room with little to no distractions.
It's hard to find a place without any distractions, but try to if you can. Whether its a space in your home or in public locations get away for a little while. Stop multi-tasking and start really thinking for yourself. Use your pen and paper to draw or write out your thoughts as you go.

My battery is now fully charged and I'm anxious to create new artistic content for this blog and my life. I hope you'll try a few of these tips out the next time you need a little creative juice. big kiss, bekuh

Today Is My Mom's Birthday

9.16.2012

Today is my mom's birthday and I'm so thankful for her on this day. Though we celebrated her yesterday, I wanted to take a moment today to say I love you Mom and I'm so thankful for you everyday of my life. Not just for the obvious things like giving birth to me, but the little things like knowing when I really need a phone call, and hugging me extra tight. You used to sing "You Are My Sunshine" to me when I was little, but the truth is you're really mine. love, bekuh

Make It: Carpet Bag Satchel

9.14.2012

I've seen tons of carpet bag DIYs floating around on the internet, and a lot of them are pretty groovy. But, I always walk away thinking the bags look a little funny, I mean they look way to long to be a normal handbag and I wanted something that I would actually use in real life. After thinking for awhile about how I could perfect the carpet bag it occurred to me that I could just cut it to a more desirable length and use the excess as a strap and flap. Today learn how to make a carpet bag satchel of your own!
Step 1: Gather your supplies. You'll need a small piece of canvas about 2"x8," scissors, needle and tread, sewing machine, button, and 2'x3' rag carpet. I found my rug at a discount home store.

Step 2: Cut off the tassels on the edge of your rug (unless you like the decoration). Check for any oddities in the rug, like frayed edges, or holes. You maybe able to work around these when sewing up the bag.

Step 3: Fold your carpet bag into shape, and determine how wide you'd like it to be, and much of a flap you'd like there to be. I decided to cut off about 6" along the length of one side on the carpet so the bag would still be satchel length but not extra long or wide.

Step 4: Cut off the excess length you'd like to remove and set the strip aside for later use. Now using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew up the length of the cut side of carpet. This will keep the carpet from fraying as you sew up your bag. Fold your bag back into purse shape (allowing about 4"-6" excess for the flap). Sew the body of the bag together along either side.
Step 5: After your purse body is ready you can move on to the strap. Grab the excess strip you cut off your carpet and decide how wide you'd like your strap to be. I decided on about 2' wide.

Step 6: Sew down the length of the strap at the desired width and sew across each end for extra security.

Step 7: Now cut off the excess rag carpet you don't want for the strap. Set strap aside again.

Step 8: Grab the body of your bag again and fold over the top section of the flap about 1" and sew across for a more polished edge.
Step 9: Now you're ready to start on the canvas details for the bag. You will be making three loops, two for connecting the strap, and one for the button.

10. Cut 3 1"x4" pieces of canvas out and fold the edges inward. Iron them down for easy sewing.

11. Sew down the center of the canvas strip to seal them closed. I used a kind of crazy stitch that went with the rag carpet's design.

12. Sew the canvas strips onto the bag. The two for the handle should be connected where the bag and flag meet. The strip for the button should be looped and sewn onto the back of the flap in the center.
Step 13: Grab the bag's strap and loop about 1" of the strap's base around the first canvas loop near the flap. Sew closed. Repeat on the other side.

Step 14: Sew your button to the body of the bag using a needle and thread. Make sure it lines up withe your button closure before attaching it.

Step 15: Check for any loose strings, close up the button and try the bag on for size.

Step 16: Fill your new satchel with lots of goodies and you're ready to go!

My new carpet bag satchel is the perfect size to carry art supplies with me wherever I go. I hope you'll try this DIY out and show me your results! big kiss, bekuh
