Weekly Obsessions: Kelley's Dream Backpacking Destinations

9.09.2012

Today the beautiful Kelley from A Crooked Trail is here to share some of her dream backpacking destinations with you while I'm partying it up in Chicago! Kelley is one of my sweetest bloggy friends and it's definitely a goal of mine to make it to GA to hike with this wild woman. You'll marvel at her backpacking destination spots I just know it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey all you Secondhand people! I'm Kelley and I blog over at A Crooked Trail. Can I tell you how flipping excited I am to be on Bekuh's blog today? Well I can't. Because I just can't put it into words. Too much emotion...please look away.

Anyhoo! I have the itch. No it's not a gross kind of itch, please don't run away. I have the travel itch. And I always have the backpacking itch. It's kind of a double-whammy, but it makes for an awesome trip. So today I am going to torture myself and talk about the 6 best hikes in all the land. And when I say all the land, I mean the whole world. For real.

1. GR-20- Corsica, France
This is a 112 mile right of passage for European hikers. Can we talk about intense? I mean seriously just look at the photo. If you breathe the wrong way you could fall to your death. Scary? Oh geez, yes. Do I still want to conquer that trail? I'm dying to.

2. The Great Himalaya Trail- Nepal
It's the Himalayas guys. Need I say more? Probably not, but I'm going to. National Geographic says this trail is for epic adventure seekers. Um... sign me up!! This trail is partly based off of ancient trade and pilgrimage paths. Oh, and ever had a desire to see Mt. Everest from a safe and non-terrifying distance? Great because if you hike this trail that WILL happen.

3. The Snowman Trek, Bhutan
Y'all we are going to need to do some Zumba before we hit up this trail, because it's been described as the most difficult long walk on the planet! But you know what? It's also described as the best hike in the world. I guess you have to endure some pain to see some beauty.

4. Santa Cruz Trek- Cordillera Blanca, Peru
Want to see Peru in all of its natural beauty, but want to stay away from the tourists frolicking on the Inca trail? Welcome to the Santa Cruz trek. The trail goes through Cordillera Blanca, which has the most concentrated collection of big peaks in the Western Hemisphere. Basically what I'm saying is bring your camera.

5. Laugavegurinn Pass, Iceland
This is the first trail that I desperately want to go on but can't even pronounce the name. I'm thinking there will be some language barriers. A volcano did erupt on this trail in 2010, but don't worry it's safe now. Probably. A quarter of the population of this island believes in elves and other mythical creatures. So if I don't see any on my hike, someone is going to hear about it.

6. Continental Divide Trail
Yes people, we actually have this wonderfully magical trail in the United States. It goes through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico and it is a grand total of 2,268 miles. Parts of the trail are rough and incomplete which means you need to bushwack. Which also means you get to use a machete. Am I scaring you yet? I shouldn't be it's totally fun.

At this point I already have my backpack packed and I'm tying up my boots. Come and join my adventures on A Crooked Trail!

  8. I did the Laugavegur this summer. You find pictures on my blog http://coco-lores.blogspot.de/ (sorry, it's German, but the pictures are nice anyway).

If you go there, you don't have to worry about language barriers - the Icelanders speak a very good English, even the older ones, since the US Army was based at Iceland until 2006 or 2008...

And you will most definitely see elves and other creatures.

Iceland really is such a great island with great people... I am still overwhelmed.

Oh, and Corse is great, too. :)

So here's to hoping I'll find my way to the Americas soon... The westcoast of Canada is on my list for next year. :)
