My Personal Style Revelations

9.27.2012

I've been doing a lot of letting go lately, not of heavy emotional burdens, but the stuff that you start accumulating when you've lived in a place for 3+ years. I think this must be some kind of epidemic because everyone in blog-land seems to be simplifying their lives right now haha. Through this recent purge I've really started to notice some style trends I gravitate towards, like a lot. For the sake of the future me, who will most certainly want to buy into fads and trends, I thought I'd make a list of the things you'll pretty much always find in my closet.

1. Pendant Necklaces
I have about 24 or so (exaggeration for effect) necklaces with a simple pendant on the end and I wear one of them almost everyday. I love the way a long necklace extends my short silhouette and lays on most fabric. I also love playing with said pendants when I'm wearing them and it gives me something to do in awkward social moments.

2. Reddish Brown Vintage Bags
I don't know when or how my little collection of leather bags started, but if you look at my handbags you'll see that 75% of these goodies are a reddish brown color and worn around the edges. I think I gravitate towards the red browns because they'll go with black or brown and that color leather never goes out of style. Also I buy them thrifted and vintage because I'm cheap and can't afford newer models.

3. Neutral Colored Shoes
Ryan made a comment this past Spring about how I buy pretty much the same color shoes over and over again, and though I am trying to branch out, I think it's important to buy my more expensive investment pieces in a color that I can wear with a lot of clothing options. So you'll always see me rocking tans, browns, and blacks; sorry if it bores you.

4. Knee length skirts & dresses
Okay so to be fair this is something I've known for a long time, but knee length skirts/dresses (or just above) are the most flattering length for my petite frame. I love a good maxi every now and again, and minis are great for date nights, but knee length skirts are classy and timeless and I like that in my clothes.

5. Stripes
I have loved striped shirts since about the age of 12; when I first heard of their mystique, and saw their glamour in old movies. I have since owned at least one black and white striped shirt without fail. I have continued to add to my stripe collection through the years, and there are a couple of tops that are wearing a bit thin. Soon I'll be adding a couple more of these cuties to my wardrobe, because I just can't stop myself.

I bet if you look through my archives you'll notice a lot of these things in past outfit posts. What are some of your style essentials? Have you too been bit by the simplification bug? I'd love to hear. big kiss, bekuh

  1. i've always, always, always have a few staple jackets.
they feel more grown up to me but the basics last for years and they can add so much to an outfit for an occasion!
oh. and boots. but i think i could dedicate an entire paragraph to that.

    xo the egg out west.

  2. I really wish I could figure out what I liked so precisely. It seems to change from day to day. I do know that I've always bought the same style of skirt, but now I live in a very windy town and can't wear my skirts most of the time. I'm trying out new wind-safe styles :)

  5. I did a similar post earlier this year. It's funny the things that you're drawn to over and over again. I find my go-tos are cardigans, brown belts, scarves, wooden earrings, colourful tights, and umpire waste dresses.

Here's my post, if you want to check it out: http://nicolescoffeeshop.blogspot.ca/2012/05/my-style-staples.html

I think I need to jump on board your reddish brown leather bag obsession. It's such a great colour!

  6. My simplification began in early August when I started reading a biography about Cary Grant. He definitely lived buy the "less is more" philosophy and believe that it was better to invest in one piece than buy seven crappier versions. That's definitely stuck with me, so I have been slowly but surely whittling down the unnecessary items in my closet in an attempt to simplify it and hopefully discover my true personal style.

So far I have learned that heels are an impractical purchase (I wear them maybe once or twice a year), denim shirts are amazing, a quality grey boyfriend cardigan is a must-have and a leather jacket makes any outfit look better. I'm also a huge fan of striped shirts and A-line skirts and dresses.

Didn't mean to write a book here... Maybe I should write my own "Style Revelations" post ;)

  9. It looks like really know yourself, Bekuh. I tend to gravitate towards clothes in general.... haha. But seriously, I like vintage pieces, especially the kind that have that 80s sequined flair.

  10. I'm the same and always go for similar things.. but like you I've noticed they're all classics! They're the kind of pieces you could buy any time and know will never go out of style.. so part of me thinks why change and go for faddy things?!

  11. I am the same with dresses, particularly vintage ones. I once gave myself a challenge of wearing only dresses for a month and I barely made a dent in getting through them all! So this summer I did a bit of purging and simplifying, which felt great!

Just found your blog by the way, and I am a smitten kitten! It's lovely!

  12. Wow Bekuh, I can't definitely see how true these revelations are! You always look so darn cute though, so these looks sure are workin' for you!

My go-tos? Jeans. jeans, jeans, jeans. I love a great pair of perfectly worn in boot cut denim! I also love triangle scarves! Spring, Summer, Fall , or Winter...you can find me in a great pair of jeans and a triangle scarf at least once a week. (although I usually will opt for a lighter weight scarf during the warmer months ;)

Great post! I"m lovin' the hexagons at the top....fun look!

  13. Amen to all of these things. They are my go-tos are well (except for the purses. I'm a little jealous of the purses.)

  14. Ah I love this! I guess if I think about it, some things I wear all the time are: statement necklaces, ballet flats (this type of shoe dominates any other in my wardrobe), tons of stripes, and cardigans. :)

  15. It's so fun seeing in what areas your personal style changes and in what ways it stays the same. Once I realized just how horrible uncomfortable high heels are, I've gravitated toward black flats. Yes, I'm somewhat of a grandma when it comes to comfort ;)
Also, I totally agree that knee length is uber classy!

  16. yes, yes!
I think there's something about this stage of life, and discovering your personality and what you actually love to do...and wear.
I have a thousand pairs of brown leather shoes. A thousand different-patterned button-down shirts. Stretchy black or grey jeans. Simple tshirts with a vneck.
That's about it! A few stray pieces for those days when you want to live on the edge, but mostly I stay within those guidelines, and happily so.

  17. I've definitely been trying to simplify- but for us thrifters it's so hard! Today ends a 5 month challenge I did where I could only buy second hand clothes and shoes and I think it helped change my habits of impulse buys and giving in to fast fashion. I hear ya on the pendant necklaces, I have a big collection and they are my go-to accessory.

  18. i'm with you on longer hemlines. and i couldn't agree more about stripes! they're so romantic & smart.
