Weekly Obsessions: A Little Pattern in Our Lives

1.29.2012

I love pattern in every color, from every decade, and in any design. My eyes feast on the glories of pattern and I easily find myself mentally cataloging designs I like to save for later inspiration both in art and in home decoration. Today I thought I'd share some textile and wallpaper designs with you so that you too can share in my mini obsessions with textile artists and pretty commercial goods.

One of things I love most about textile design is its accessibility, you don't have to be a millionaire to buy a yard or so of good fabric; and in some cases fantastic wallpaper.

1. Lucienne Day

Lucienne Day was the woman behind so many incredible mid-century patterns that it was hard to narrow down just a couple to share with you today. She was inspired by abstract paintings and post-war came to influence countless designs and designers. We have Lucienne to thank for so much of modern textile design and she should be on the top everyone's list as a must see and a must read person of interest. How amazing is her use of both organic and geometric shapes?

2. Cole & Sons Wallpaper

I love the coloring on these Cole & Sons wallpapers. The one on the left in particular looks like a vintage photograph that has had color added to it. There is a modern Victorian flair to these that makes me want to redecorate my entire house in heavy velvet curtains, rich hued woods, and lots of wallpaper in every room.

3. Urban Outfitters' Kaleidoscope Patchwork Quilt

This blanket has the sweetest play on patterns with a floral belly and bold geometric pattern on top. I love that this is a pretty inexpensive way to boost the pattern content in a room and could be used for snuggling on the coach or in bed. Urban Outfitters has truly become the twenty-something's answer to expensive home decor stores. I have to hold myself back every time I shop there.

4. Teija Bruhn Bold Zipper Patterned Fabric

When I first saw this pattern I thought, GIANT ZIPPERS, how fun!? I almost decided to trash my studio reno plan and redo it entirely designed around this fabric. Even though the colors are very bold, as is the pattern, I think there is a timelessness about this that could be used for several generations not just now. Even if that meant storing it in the closet for a couple of years like our grandparents did.

5. Vintage Kantha Sari Quilts

I kind of have this secret crush on all things Indian (obsession really). They have the most amazing eye for color and all of its likely and unlikely combinations. I've seen these vintage sari quilts popping up all over and one of these days I'll get my hands on one and love it until the day I die, upon which I will give it to another sari loving wondering. Don't these make you want to dance, or paint, or do something creative for a day?

6. Helen Dardik Patterns

Helen Dardik is a pretty recent discovery for me and I absolutely love her whimsical little textile illustrations. I first fell in love with her french looking courier pigeons and have long wondered who this woman could be. I finally looked her up and she has a pretty blog that is just as colorful and beautiful as her images, Orange you Lucky! You should check it out yourself because it's beautiful, the horse and fox print is my new favorite.

Enjoy your Sunday my lovelies and be sure to check out all of these phenomenal textile and pattern sources for your own inspiration! I'm looking forward to sharing some of my recent artistic endeavors with you soon. For more Weekly Obsession post click here. big kiss, bekuh

  3. I'm with Jazz. The Cole & Sons wallpaper is fabulous. I love the Victorian feel. I've always been more of a solid kind of girl, but lately patterns have been calling out to me. I think they're so fun and more versatile than I once thought.
